How this calculator works

Overtime pay is your regular hourly rate times the overtime multiplier, times the overtime hours.

Overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours
Total pay = regular pay + overtime pay

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), covered nonexempt employees generally must receive at least time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Some states go further. California, for example, also requires daily overtime in many cases. Exempt employees, often salaried, may not be owed overtime at all. See the U.S. Department of Labor overtime page for the federal rules.

Example

You earn $20 an hour and work 45 hours in a week. The overtime rate is $20 × 1.5 = $30. Regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800, overtime pay is 5 × $30 = $150, and the week's total is $950 before taxes.
